Bitcoin can be understood more clearly when it is separated into four layers: a peer-to-peer network, a public accounting system, a set of monetary rules, and a market-priced digital asset. Confusing these layers often leads to exaggerated claims.
Start with the network
Independent computers validate transactions against shared rules. Miners compete to order valid transactions into blocks, while nodes reject blocks that violate the protocol. This division matters because mining power does not automatically grant authority to rewrite every rule.
Understand the supply policy
Bitcoin’s issuance schedule is defined in software and trends toward a fixed maximum. Scarcity alone does not establish value; demand, liquidity, security, usability, regulation, and market structure all influence price.
Custody changes the risk
Holding an exchange balance is economically different from controlling private keys. Self-custody reduces dependence on an intermediary but adds operational responsibility. A sensible decision considers technical skill, recovery planning, transaction size, and threat model.
Questions worth asking
- What problem is the network solving?
- Who can change the software rules?
- How will keys be backed up and inherited?
- What assumptions would make the thesis fail?
